Math 830, Abstract Algebra I

This course will focus on modules over commutative rings. Topics include basic module theory (e.g., submodules, homomorphisms, direct sums and tensor products); free modules, injective modules, projective modules; direct and inverse limits; elements of homological algebra. Additional topics may include the theory of modules over principal ideal domains, and normal forms; graded rings and modules.

Homework will be of two types. There will be problems assigned daily after each class. Beginning September 8, there will also be biweekly (fortnightly) homework assignments to be turned in, which consist largely of problems selected from the Daily Homework. You may discuss homework problems with your fellow classmates; in fact, I encourage you to form working groups for homework sets. However, I would like to ask that each person in the class write up the final version of each assignment on their own.

Your total Homework score will count 75 percent of your final grade. There will also be an in-class final exam counting 25 percent of your final grade.

A = 80-100; B = 60-79; C= 50-59; D = 40-49; F = 0-39.
